Gordon wrapped up the home and away season with a convincing victory against CHFL ladder leader Waubra last Saturday. Played at Waubra in between rain, sleet and an icy wind, that cut its way through even the best of thermals. The Eagles controlled play from the very first bounce to run out 45 point winners.
In the freezing conditions Ethan Crackel was on fire early and bought up the first Gordon goal midway through the opening quarter. He, along with Luke Gunnell, continuously drove the ball into the Eagles’ forward area but the treacherous conditions played havoc for effective scoring. At the twenty-minute mark Brendan Sutcliffe marked and kicked truly as Crackel left the field after a heavy head clash. Blurred vision prevented the consistent on-baller from taking any further part in the match. Just before the quarter time siren Tye Murphy swopped on a loose ball and snapped a team lifting goal that sent his team to the break with a twenty-four point advantage. Scores: Gordon 3.6 -24 Waubra 0.0 – 0
The home side with the aid of a strong wind found the Gordon defensive group hard to penetrate for most of the second quarter. At the fifteen minute mark and after three tenacious efforts Eagle Brad Horsham was rewarded with a free kick which he dutifully converted into the blustery wind.  Five minutes later Waubra kicked their first goal for the day. As the players slipped and slithered off the field at half time The Eagles lead had been reduced to twenty points. Scores: Gordon 4.6 -30 Waubra 1.4 -10.
Forty seconds into the second half Adam Toohey goaled to extend the visitors’ advantage. Waubra replied with a much need goal before Jordan Clampit kicked the ball off the ground straight into the midriff of Toohey, who skillfully slotted another set shot goal. Co-captain and key defender Mark Gunnell started a chain of precise disposals around the scoreboard side of the ground that ended with Brendan Sutcliffe who stood and delivered another major for the visitors. In the next passage of play Gunnell was injured and stretchered from the ground with what appeared to be a serious back injury. Eagle ruckman Zac May started to dominate the stoppages which saw on-ballers Mattew Hoy, Jordan Clampit Tye Murphy and Matt Raworth take control of the mid field battle. Waubra lifted its work rate and scored three goals but the Gordon defense worked calmly and did not panic as the time clock ticked past thirty-six minutes.
By three quarter time, in terrible conditions, thirty two points separated two sides, both hell bent on victory. Scores: Gordon 8.12 – 60 Waubra 4.4 – 28.
As so often happened throughout this year the Eagles finished strongly. Toohey was now working both ends of the ground as was a number of his teammates who, without question slide to wherever required. Waubra had no answers for the disciplined Gordon who focused on the trusted maneuverings of Coach Ron Watt. In the end Gordon’s advantage had grown to over forty points with two goals to speedster Jaymes Gorman and another to the hard working Toohey.
Final Scores: Gordon 11.15 81 Waubra 5.6 -36.
Though battered and bruised after such a torrid encounter each Eagle played their part in this victory that saw Waubra slide from first on the CHFL ladder to fourth. Gordon stepped up to third position and now face Newlyn in Sunday’s Second Qualifying Final to be played at Bungaree.
In other great news, the reserves continued their recent good form to finish sixth and will play Hepburn. The Under 18’s finished on top and will also play Hepburn whilst the under 15’s finished second on the ladder and will play Buninyong. And then there’s the A Grade Netballers! How fantastic is their achievement? Their growth over the last ten years has been patient and deserves applause. Congrats to all.  Details to follow.
This year has seen the club continue to grow in all areas. Whether on the field or court, the management of all those within the Nest has to be acknowledged and congratulated. As this new final’s series begin please continue your support and come along whenever possible. All Eagles not only play for each other, they play and represent you. “All for one and one for all is the way we are at Gordon”, has never been truer.
Hope to see you at one of our games.
