Captain Mark Gunnell, playing his 200th game, led his team to a 37 point victory against Creswick last Saturday. Elected joint captain in 2011 for his passion and commitment, Mark has developed into an influential leader who communicates honestly, guides by example both on and off the field, and gives his all for the benefit of our club. Mark has captained the CHFL squad for the past two seasons and represented the league since 2012.

Like the Creswick oval drainage system that could not cope with the consistent heavy rain, the Creswick side could not handle an opponent hell bent on giving their captain victory on his special day.

The Eagles welcomed into the team debutant Bailey Colligan from the under 18s along with Zac Ryan and Brad Horsham who returned from injuries.

Kicking with a strong wind in the first quarter Creswick could only manage two behinds against the disciplined Eagles. The windsurfing conditions made it almost impossible to score though the Eagles patiently worked the football around the water logged oval. The defensive group led by Brad Hallam, Mark Gunnell and Gerard Clifford, repeatedly gained possession and skilfully navigated their way out of troubled waters until quarter time.

During the second term the Eagle onballers took control within the rainstorm. Their disciplined setups helped clear congested stoppages and goals flowed to Adam Toohey, Brendan Sutcliffe and the improving Isaac McCabe. Scores at half time Gordon 3.9 – 27 Creswick 1.3 -9.

At times the football floated on pools of water with players splashingthrough the soaking squalls. Some impressive ball gathering and foot skills from first gamer junior Bailey Colligan set up a Taylem Wason goal. Minutes later Wason added another six pointer and Gordon sailed to a thirty point advantage at the last break.

The Eagles skills shone out in the saturated conditions as both sides strived to the end. The floodlights beamed on Adam Toohey as he snapped the only goal for the final quarter. Final Score: Gordon 6.15 – 51 Creswick 1.8 – 14.

Coach Ron Watt congratulated his team for their disciplined display and their four quarter effort.

The Eagles now face old rival Ballan at the Nest this coming Saturday.

Hope to see you there.

Go Eagles.
